Unfolded ver.1
Individual snapshots of my body, never quite whole, connect through hinges, clips, and brackets that can flip around to reveal different parts of myself. I am, we are, always changing. A portrait captures a fleeting moment and becomes increasingly less representative over time. This disjointed self-portrait allows change and offers intimate angles of myself that I am otherwise hesitant to show. Included in the portrait are not just representations of my body, but also paint swatches, notes, and journal entries that equally reflect my being.
From a curatorial standpoint, whoever decides to hang the work can decide which parts to keep visible, taking away the usual agency a self-portrait can afford. I present different versions of myself depending on the situation, so this painting does the same.
