Window display of oversized fragrance bottle in SCAD's Morris hall
Below the display states: "Sitting with a Rothko is a moment of meditation and self discovery. Some of my most memorable trips to MoMA have been in the company of his art. I've always wished I could bottle his work and wear it on my wrist so that I might be a work of art as transcendent as Rothko's."
Beside the display, vials of "Rothko" were available for sampling. I watched as people either fell in love or scrunched up their noses or sneakily slid them into their pockets, perhaps wanting a piece to take with them: Oh how I wish I could fit a piece of Rothko in my pocket.
It was an ambitious (arrogant) task to bottle a Rothko: frankly, I knew I could never do it from the onset. Regardless of the scent's "Rothkoness", it seemed I at least somewhat emulated an audience of Rothko onlookers.
