Verdigris

Verdigris and ultramarine egg tempera on paper, 2023

Verdigris, essentially copper rust, is a pigment that has been used since prehistory, but is seldom used today.
It's certainly the most curious pigment I work with, shifting from a brilliant turquoise to a rich, pastoral green over time.
I see my materials not as tools, but as collaborators. And verdigris, a confident pigment with a mind of it's own, is my second-in-command. Being one of the first pigments I learned how to make, it holds a special place in my heart.
Verdigris has represented many things to me over the years: liberty and freedom, change, growth, toxicity, money and power and degradation and the ancient. I assume that list will just keep growing.
