VERDIGRIS

copper rust

Verdigris and ultramarine egg tempera on paper, 2023

Artists have used verdigris (copper rust) since prehistory, though it has nearly disappeared from the contemporary artist's toolbox.
Verdigris, a confident pigment with a mind of it's own, holds a special place in my heart: It's the first pigment I learned how to make. Shifting from a brilliant turquoise to a rich, pastoral green over time, verdigris doesn't stay stagnant for long.
Verdigris represents more and more to me over time: liberty and freedom, change, growth and toxicity, money and power and degradation and potential and the ancient... I assume that list will just keep growing.
